As many people around the globe cancel business and leisure trips, one may contemplate whether it makes sense to participate in tourism activities, and if so, how and where.
Here are four things to keep in mind.
Social distancing can include getaways, including trips in nature, solo travel, and activities such as cycling, meditation and hiking. These activities allow for the recommended two meters (three steps) of distance.
To understand the best locations to travel (or to avoid), consult local public health warnings of various destinations, and refrain from travel to Level 2 or 3 locations according to your specific health circumstance and those of your close network. The World Health Organisation has COVID-19 advice and updates, in six languages, here. There is also an outbreak tracker from John’s Hopkins University here.
“Staycations” are a great way to both support the local economy, including working wage jobs, and reduce the risk of cabin fever. Check out your national parks. Order in from a local restaurant. Choose a sustainable hotel, locally, to stay for a weekend. Pick up a new hobby such as playing a musical instrument or birdwatching.
And remember. Humanity is diverse in situation, perspective, and personality – try not to judge yourself or others. Be good to one another.
