At the top of the Avala Hill stands the Unknown Soldier Monument dedicated to Serbian heroes fallen in World War I. Nearby is located one of the highest comunication towers in Europe. The Tower was built in 1961 and destroyed by NATO air forces in 1999. A new tower was built after a group of newspaper workers started fundraising for reconstruction.
