Below, we’ve gathered our favorite desserts and sweets for the sweet-toothed traveler and tourist.
#1 – Ghana – Chocolate
Ghana is home to cocoa, and from bean to bar, it’s delicious. Ghana is the second largest supplier of cocoa to the global supply chain, making up one-quarter of supplies. The chocolate made in Ghana is a must – find socially and environmentally sustainable brands, and enjoy supporting climate-friendly supply chains. Chocolate production close to cocoa supply reduces carbon emissions and supports the local economy with higher-value products. Favorites include 57 Chocolate and Niche.

#2 – Jamaica – Fruit Cake
Jamaican fruitcake often contains rum, and rum cake can contain fruit, but these are two distinct cakes from the beautiful island of Jamaica. This cake is found during the winter solstice and at weddings, with many variations (now some people are making cupcake versions). Ask for local ingredients (the sugar and spices are grown locally). Enjoy this flavorful taste of the Caribbean.

#3 – Austria – Apple strudel
One of Austria’s best-known sweet dishes is the classic apple strudel, a thin filled pastry made of apples, raisins, sugar, and cinnamon. It’s ubiquitous and spelled apfelstrudel in German. Get it served with a side of vegan ice cream.

#4 – France – Bûche de Noël
This delicacy is normally only available in December of each year, but the ‘bûche de noël’ is more than worth the wait. It’s a ‘holiday log’ that comes in different sizes and flavors, but always the same shape. Some popular choices include chocolate, passion fruit, and pistachio. Ask for ingredients that are organic and fair trade.

#5 – Taiwan – Pineapple Cake
The pineapple cake has become iconic in Taiwan. Before, it was only baked for ceremonial purposes but has since become popularized. It’s more of shortbread with sweet pineapple filling (sometimes pineapple is combined with other fruits). Don’t leave Taiwan without trying some of this specialty with a cup of tea. Brands include SunnyHills and Kaonuxu.
